Chairmans Report 2011-2012

This report reflects the work of the Brighton Hill Community College Association known as the BHCCA in the last academic year 2011-2012

We are a group of parents and teachers who volunteer our time to raise funds to enrich the experience of the students at Brighton Hill Community School by making donations to departments within the school.
This year, we have been able to support requests from departments which have varied from "talking tins" to encourage speaking skills in languages to equipment for Duke of Edinburgh expeditions. The Treasurers report will have more details on the specific donations.

The largest event that the BHCCA organises is the Year 11 Leavers Ball held in July at Oakley Hall. This is one of the highlights of the school year and was a great success again this year. Thanks must go to Sue Burke who again organised and co-ordinated this very special event.

The cost of the Leavers Ball is usually subsidised by proceeds from the Fashion Show. We were not able to hold a Fashion Show this year as we did not have a dress supplier. Instead we held our first Christmas Bazaar and we had a fantastic range of stalls selling varied crafts and produce. We were pleased to involve students from the school who helped performing music, assisting on stalls, at the door and by selling refreshments. We were very fortunate that Barclays bank matched the amount raised and thanks must go to Celesta King who organised and co-ordinated this event at short notice. It was not as well attended as we would have liked but despite this we raised a large amount of money.

We have continued to attend functions at school such as the Gym and Dance display where we sell raffle tickets and provide refreshments in order to raise funds. Thank you to Wendy Kersley for organising the raffle which involves writing letters asking for donations to ensure we have sufficient and appropriate prizes for each event.

As I look forward to the year 2012-2013, I am very pleased to report that we will once again be holding a Fashion Show for the students in Year 11; this will be held on Thursday 25th October, from 6.45pm. This is an opportunity for students and parents, especially Year 11's to view dresses and suits modelled by their peers, buy raffle tickets and enjoy being entertained by musicians from the music department.
We are always looking for different ways to raise funds but more importantly to enrich the experience of all the students at Brighton Hill. We have the ball for the Year 11's and this year for the first time we are holding a disco for the Year 7 students on Thursday 13th December; more details will follow.

All this work would not be possible without the dedication, hard work and time given by all the members of the committee. We are very lucky to be supported by Mr Currie and teachers and support staff at the school. We need new people to join the committee to ensure that we are able to continue all this work when the present members leave. Please consider joining this friendly committee. We are always open to new and innovative ways to raise funds and suggestions from parents would be gratefully received.

Finally on a personal note, I would like to thank all the committee members and school staff for their support over the past year.

Caroline Mackenzie
