MFL at Key Stage Three

All students learn French in Years 7 and 8 as their first Modern Foreign Language, regardless of their setting in English.  In Year 8, prior to choosing their options, they also have taster lessons in German and Spanish and study why it is so important to learn a language, in order to make an informed decision about any language options they may wish to take at Key Stage 4.  We believe that language learning should be available to all and so ensure that all students have the option of studying one, if not two, languages at Key Stage 4, regardless of their set in Key Stage 3.

The Key Stage 3 schemes of work are designed to contain a module of work per half-term, with a focus on grammar and vocabulary building and include both formative and summative assessments in each of the 4 skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing.  These enable students to be able to see and track their progress.  There are also opportunities for students to complete a variety of projects relating to the modules that they are studying.  These projects cover the French culture and history and are important for developing students’ awareness of cultures other than their own, as well as developing their ICT, research and group work skills and encouraging them to be good self-managers.   Students are generally awarded an attitude grade for their project work.

VLE
Students at Key Stage 3 are encouraged to access their Home Study tasks (differentiated homework activities that develop spelling and reading/writing skills), ILPs (Independent Learning Projects) and additional resources on the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), accessible via the school’s website (http://www.brightonhill.hants.sch.uk).  Students generally complete one learning and one written homework per fortnight, all accessed via the Home Study tasks on the VLE.   The VLE gives students and parents the opportunity to access information from home, enabling students to extend their learning outside the classroom and to become independent learners.
