42. Spiritual, Moral, Social & Cultural Policy

Overview

Brighton Hill Community School understands the importance that a student’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development plays in their ability to learn and thrive.

We ensure that our school ethos, curriculum, and inclusion provision allows students to enjoy and reflect on their learning experiences, recognise the difference between right and wrong, use a range of social skills in different contexts and understand and appreciate a wide range of cultural influences.

Guidelines
All curriculum areas have a contribution to make to a child’s spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. This will be achieved through active learning, drawing from a wide range of cultural contexts, and ensuring classroom behaviour promotes and rewards acceptable behaviour.

All adults will model and promote expected behaviour, and show respect for all students and staff.
The FLC, tutor and House system will encourage social development of students through a variety of activities.

The school and students will take an active part in their local, national and global community.

Spiritual Development
As a school we aim to provide opportunities for students to develop spiritually through:

  • Discuss and reflect on their beliefs and the beliefs of others through the curriculum, Citizenship and House events.
  • Lessons which are active and engaging will encourage a sense of enjoyment and fascination alongside allowing students to be imaginative and creative.
  • Feedback and reflection within lessons and Citizenship will encourage students to reflect on their own experiences.
  • Spiritual development will be specifically focused through PEB, Citizenship, House events, assemblies and whole school events.

Moral Development

As a school we aim to provide opportunities for students to develop morally through:

  • The school has clear rules and behaviour policies in place for students to understand the difference between right and wrong and the consequences of their actions.
  • Work in Citizenship and tutor activities along with the Student Voice and Prefect system encourage students to understand democracy and laws in England.
  • Throughout all areas of school and curriculum students are encouraged to discuss, understand and appreciate a wide range of viewpoints on moral and ethical issues. This is enhanced through the FLC and tutor provision.

Social Development
As a school we aim to provide opportunities for students to develop socially through:

  • Our whole school ethos of inclusiveness encourages all students to work together and socialise with students from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds.
  • The support of students’ emotional, social and behavioural needs in school through Tutors, Heads of House and the FLC ensures they learn to co-operate, work together and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Specific projects such as Duke of Edinburgh, Young Leaders, Young Interpreters and involvement with our local Elderly Care Home, Hospice, Primary schools and local businesses ensure students are part of the wider community and make a difference through volunteering.
  • Through curriculum, inclusion and whole school projects, students are encouraged to engage with fundamental British values such as respect, democracy, liberty and law.

Cultural Development
As a school we aim to provide opportunities to develop culturally through:

  • Using Citizenship and Tutor projects to help students understand and appreciate the wide range of cultural influences on our heritage.
  • Highlight and appreciate diversity and different cultures through our support of EAL and GRT students through projects such as Young Interpreters.
  • Encourage students to engage in artistic, sporting and cultural opportunities through the Curriculum, school trips and extra-curricular activities.
  • Whole school events, House themes and Curriculum work should help students to develop and understanding of local, national and global communities.
