The Science Department

The aim of the Science department is to encourage or pupils to develop their full potential as learners. Science enriches our lives and expands our imagination. Our curriculum is a dynamic one, which strives to cater for the individual needs and requirements of all pupils. Within lessons, we expect our young scientists to question established theories as well as be resilient, resources and creative thinkers.

Key stage 3
At Key stage 3 pupils have four lessons of Science per week, covering a range of topics with plenty of experimental work where possible. We follow the Kerboodle Activate 2 year course. At the end of each term pupils plan and carry out their own ‘big practical’ assessment to enhance their practical skills. In year 7 pupils study Particles, Cells, Forces, and Elements, compounds and mixtures, Sound and Light, Acids and Reactions, Space Body Systems and Reproduction. In year 8 the topics studied are Health and Lifestyle, The periodic table, Energy, Electricity and Magnetism, Separating Techniques, Metals and acids and The Earth.

Key stage 4
Our KS4 curriculum is tailored to the needs of the individual and prepares the student for progression into key stage 5 or a vocational course. We want our pupils to enjoy Science and to be able to understand and relate it to the world around them in order to prepare them for the world of work. The Combined GCSE course in Science leads to qualifications in two science GCSEs. We follow the AQA Trilogy course where students are assessed through 6 papers at the of the 3 year GCSE course. The separate science course allows pupils to gain three GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.  Each subject is assessed through 2 papers at the end of the 3 year course.
